Instrumentl and Candid's Foundation Directory are built for teams that research funders every week. A small nonprofit, or a freelance grant writer working with one, usually needs a short list for this season. A monthly login is a lot of money for that.
A ranked list, then you're done.
Tell us the organization and the state. We use public 990-PF grants to organizations in the same cause, then write down the practical parts: who they funded, how large those grants tend to be, and how to apply. You get a PDF. Nothing renews.
What a report contains
- 01A ranked list of 25–50 private foundations, or fewer if that is all the filings support
- 02Matched on NTEE cause and state or neighboring region
- 03Grant history taken from Form 990-PF, Part XV
- 04Typical grant size, based on those grants
- 05How to apply, when the public record says so
- 06Plain-English notes, not a raw spreadsheet dump
Not included. Not a grant writer, not a live database, and not a prediction. Corporate and government grants are outside the 990-PF record this product uses. Foundations change programs. Being on the list does not mean they will fund you.

Notes
01Where does the data come from?
Public IRS Form 990-PF filings for processing years 2024–2026. That build covers about 134,000 foundations and about 4.1 million grant lines. A filing lists grants the foundation made, the recipient, and the amount. Processing year is the year the IRS posted the return, not necessarily the year the grant was paid.
02How current is it?
IRS releases lag. The newest public return for a foundation is often 1–2 years behind the grants they are making now. Staff, guidelines, and deadlines change. Use the report as a researched starting list, then check the foundation's current instructions before you apply.
03What is in a full report?
A ranked list of private foundations that have funded organizations in the same NTEE cause and the same state or nearby region. For each one: grant history from the filings, a typical grant size, and how to apply when the public record says so. A full report aims for 25–50 foundations. If fewer foundations show up in the filings, you get as many as are actually there.
04Can I see a sample first?
Yes. The free sample is Jessamine County Food Pantry in Nicholasville, Kentucky: 31 peer nonprofits and 44 foundations. Download it from the site. You can also ask for a short list for your own mission — the top 5 foundations, by email. That shorter list is not the paid report.
05How long does a paid report take?
We email the PDF within 5 business days of payment. If we miss that window, email us and you can cancel for a full refund.
06What is the refund policy?
Full refund within 14 days of delivery if the report has fewer than 10 relevant funders. A 3-pack refunds $49 for that report, or the full $129 if you cancel before any report is delivered. Details are on the refund policy page.
07Is this a subscription?
$49 is one report. $129 is three reports. Nothing renews. We never see or store your card number. When checkout is on, Stripe hosts the payment page.
08Will this get us a grant?
No. A foundation on the list has given to similar work in a public filing. That is a reason to look them up, not a promise they will fund you. Many will decline. We don't write the proposal and we don't submit it.
09Do I have to share an EIN?
No. An EIN is the federal employer identification number, formatted like 12-3456789. It helps us match the right organization. If you leave it blank, describe the mission instead. We don't ask for bank details, passwords, or a copy of your return.
10What if we are outside Kentucky?
We are starting with Kentucky and neighboring states (Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia). You can still order from another state. If the public filings don't support at least 10 relevant funders, the refund policy applies.
11Who is this for?
Small nonprofits, roughly under a $2 million annual budget, and freelance grant writers working with them. It is a poor fit if you need a live national database, corporate and government grants, or someone to write the applications.
12How is this different from Instrumentl or Candid?
Instrumentl and Candid's Foundation Directory are subscription prospecting tools with ongoing logins. This is a one-time PDF at a fixed price, written in plain English from public 990-PF filings. We are not those products and we are not affiliated with them.
